A new client asked me how I work with students. This is what I told her:

I have 20 years experience teaching A Level maths with successful results. Happy to work online too - about half my current tutoring is online. I have a graphic tablet with a stylus so I can use visual aids like virtual whiteboards etc.

With maths, I tend to agree with your daughter that it's best to understand the underlying principles behind mathematical concepts and then apply them to problem-solving.

I work with my students to help them understand how they personally learn best. I will teach principles from scratch and model examples where students require this help but I also encourage students to build independence and practise solving problems, giving the lightest of prompts needed to help the student overcome any obstacles. Quite often, my response to a student's question will be another question, sometimes leading, sometimes more open but always designed to help and encourage the student to think through the problem from a fresh perspective.

In terms of lesson format, my approach is really to be as flexible as possible. I tend to work in parallel with the student's school syllabus rather than have them study different topics with me, unless the student specifically needs to recap something or is eager to look ahead. I can work with a student on their own maths problems (e.g. homework) or I can provide materials.

I have some availability most days (expect for Sunday) though my calendar is filling up quickly now school has started.

My fees are £120/hr for weekdays after 4pm or all day Saturday, £80/hr for weekdays before 4pm. I operate on an entirely flexible basis with no cancellation fees (subject to reasonable notice)
